Economic Impact Assessment of EMP

IAN, LLC released its Economic Impact Assessment of EMP by Sage Policy Group on September 10, 2007.  This study projects the economic output loss in the case of a high-altitude (30-80 mi) EMP event impacting the Richmond, DC and Baltimore region.  Depending on whether it is a low to high impact scenario, the loss would range from $34B to $770B.  The effected area would likely be a 400-500 mile radius that would suffer a ten times larger loss.  The study outlines infrastructure damage assumptions and uses the IMPLAN model to detail the economic loss.  The study also shows how protecting the most critical 10% of infrastructure substantially reduces losses in the near term.  See the press release by Congressman Bartlett below.
